For First-Year Move Out Information

BEFORE VACATING YOUR SUITE

  • Remove all personal furniture and belongings. Any non-Harvard furniture you wish to donate to Habitat for Humanity should be taken to the trash/recycling room. Large items should be taken to Habitat collection boxes by Boylston & Thayer/Canaday.
  • Please take all your recycling, compost and trash, to the trash/recycling room for your building. Do not leave any trash/recycling in your room, bathrooms, hallways, stairwells, or outside the building.
  • Leave your room in broom-swept or vacuumed condition.
  • MicroFridge, make sure your unit is CLEAN, DRY and unplug with the doors open.
  • Close and lock your windows and turn off lights.

BEFORE LEAVING THE YARD

You must check out at Harvard Yard Operations during regular business hours Monday-Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm. We will be open longer hours starting Thursday, May 9 through Saturday, May 11 (8am-8pm), and Sunday May 12 (8am-noon) to facilitate the student move out process. On Sunday, May 12 you must check out and be moved out before 12pm HUID will stop working and all the Dorms close. You will need your Harvard University Student ID card to check out.

Those checking out after hours should put their key in the key envelope and return it via the mail slot in the Yard Operations main office door.

Key return envelopes must be sealed to avoid keys from falling out. There is a $50 term bill charge if we cannot verify the ownership of loose keys and for keys not returned.

MAIL FORWARDING

All Harvard students currently receiving mail at the Harvard Yard Mail Center should update their summer mail forwarding information. Please make sure you fill out this form before you leave campus to avoid having any of your mail returned to sender.

Moving trucks with the box section larger than 15 feet will not be allowed in the Yard.

Storage Pods, Store-to-Door and Door-to-Door storage trucks will not be allowed in the yard. Please use a different storage vendor.

YARD ACCESS INSTRUCTIONS

You will be issued a Yard pass and map upon entrance to the Yard. Please limit your loading time to 20 minutes to allow for other students to have the opportunity to enter the Yard and move out. Please leave your hazard lights on while loading and do not park on the grass. Drive slowly and be aware of pedestrian traffic.

On Saturday (5/11) and Sunday (5/12) a limited amount of temporary parking will be available at the 52 Oxford St. Garage (located at the intersection of Oxford St. and Everett St.) for those who need more time after loading. You will receive a parking permit when you arrive at Harvard Yard, which will also serve as a permit for the 52 Oxford St. Garage. If you need parking before Saturday (5/14), please contact Parking Services at 617-495-3772. Vehicles left unattended in Harvard Yard after 20 minutes will be subject to ticket and tow.

Union Dorms, Apley and the Prescotts

Street parking (20 Minutes Only) is available on Prescott Street, Harvard Street in front of Pennypacker and Apley from Thursday, May 9 through Sunday, May 12 from 8am-7pm. Vehicles left unattended after 20 minutes will be subject to ticket and tow.

Donate Your “Stuff”

Every year at Move Out several student service organizations will be collecting donations of dorm room “stuff” to support low income families and keep usable items out of the trash. Please consider donating items you no longer need.

Beginning May 2nd, you can drop items off at the TRASH/RECYLING ROOM for your building.

GENERAL REMINDERS:

Protect Your Belongings!

Please note that neither Harvard, nor any shipper can take responsibility for packages left in your room or dormitory hallways, entryways or courtyards. You are responsible for your package(s) until they are in the physical possession of a shipper and you are responsible for making sure your package(s) get to the shipper.

Packaging Instructions:

-Don't over pack. If you can't lift your box, it is too heavy.

(Box weight should not exceed 40 lbs).

-Use corrugated carton if possible.

-Use enough cushioning material to protect contents.

-Close carton securely with strong tape designed for shipping.

-Use proper labeling (complete and clear delivery and return address).

-Place duplicate label inside carton.

-COMPUTERS must be packed in original manufacturers' boxes or professionally packed.
